USING UBER AND TAKING A TAXI 4
Over the recent past, online taxis have increased their market share. No other company has gained global reputation within such a shorttime as Uber, a worldwide online transportation network company basedin the U.S. This paper looks at the similarities and differences thatexist between Uber and regular taxi companies.
Both Uber and taxis charge differently, based on different factors. However, Uber`s fare are cheaper in comparison to taking a taxi ifone is going on long trips, outside of large cities (Picchi, 2016).At other times, however, a taxi can prove more economical for quicktrips that are below $35 (Picchi, 2016). For quick trips therefore, ataxi is more economical but for a longer trip, Uber is the betteroption. In addition, Uber`s services are dependent on demand. Whendemand is high, Uber usually increases its charges. Sometimes, thefare can even double or triple (Picchi, 2016). This is common inhigh-traffic neighborhoods, Times Square in New York being an example(Picchi, 2016). Therefore when demand is high, a taxi tends to be abetter option as they do not use the surge pricing policy. UnlikeUber, taxi services are charged based on either fixed fares, ordistance travelled in meters (Picchi, 2016).
Uber and taxis are both available in major cities and towns in theUnited States, and in the world. However, there is no tipping in Uberas the Uber app has no provision for a tip on their electronicpayment option (Picchi, 2016). This is unlike in taxis where a tipcan be given to the driver for quality services offered. Furthermore, taxi drivers accept a wide variety of payment methods, includingcash. For Uber, however, cash payment is not allowed. Payment has tobe made electronically. As Uber is mainly dependent on technology,Uber drivers rely on GPS to get to the passenger`s desireddestination. Most taxi drivers, however, rely on their own knowledgeof the town or city to get to the passenger`s desired destination.Importantly, however, is that both options enable the passenger toreach their destination much faster than using regular public servicevehicles.
Safety is another difference between Uber and taxi use. Uber driversare registered and their profiles can be checked by the passengerbefore pick-up. The same applies to the passenger as they have toregister online (Lambert, 2016). Therefore, the driver and passengerare somehow familiar with one another. Also, the Uber driver must beaged 21, have clearance from the police, and should have a fulldriver`s license before they are registered with the firm. In taxis, however, the fact that the driver and passenger cannot verify oneanother`s profile is a point of security concern (Lambert, 2016).
Uber and taxi companies both have advantages and disadvantages. Theyhave many points of similarity and difference. The passenger has theopportunity and liberty to compare different factors, such as amountof fare charge, safety, availability, urgency, tipping, and desire toutilize technology before making a choice on whether to use Uber orto take a taxi to reach their desired destination.
