Sincethe creation of Medicaid and Medicare in 1965, the patient protectionand affordable care Act of 2010 has served as an important US healthlegislation. Substantial expansion of the Medicaid program, renewedfocus on prevention and a mandated minimum health benefits packageare among the major components of the recently enacted legislation.Accordingly, the essay describes the current health care reformlegislation in terms of the impact on the uninsured, Medicarerecipients, and my personal family health care coverage. Furthermore,an explanation of how the Affordable Care Act facilitates achievementof two Healthy People 2020 goals is given.
Sincethe enactment of the health care reform legislation, Medicarerecipients have reaped the benefits of reduced cost of prescriptiondrugs and enhanced preventive services. According to Shi & Singh(2015), the cost that Medicare beneficiaries used to incur onprescription drugs has reduced by approximately 48 percent. Theprovisions in the health reform legislation ensure that receiptsearning $ 85,000 and below are given a 50% discount on brand-namedrugs in the doughnut hole. The number of uninsured people hassubstantially reduced since the implementation of the provisions ofthe legislation. Shi & Singh (2015) affirm that after theenactment of the legislation, the percentage of uninsured people inthe US reduced from 16.6 % in 2013 to 10.5 % in 2015. My familyhealth care coverage has been impacted negatively by the enactment ofMedicare reform legislation as a consequence of reduced quality ofheal care services. Insured families have continuously faceddifficulty accessing providers, reduced time with providers andlonger wait times as a result of increased pressure on the existinginfrastructure (Shi & Singh, 2015).
TheAffordable Care Act facilitates achievement of various Healthy People2020 goals by providing a framework through which the mostsignificant threats to health can be addressed. According to Hesse etal. (2014), the act has provisions that ensure that the citizensreceive preventive services under Medicaid and Medicare programs. Inthis regard, the goals of longer lives free of preventable diseasestogether with that of improving good health for all can be achieved.
Inconclusion, the current health care reform legislation impacts theuninsured and Medicare recipients positively. However, family healthcare coverage if affected negatively. The provisions of theAffordable Care Act are consistent with Healthy People 2020 goals.
