What is the definition of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender?
Agay is an individual who is mainly attracted to members of thesimilar sex (International Spectrum, n.d). This term can be used forindividuals of any sex like the gay man, gay woman or gay person. Onthe other hand, for the lesbian, it refers to the women who areattracted to the other women. For the term transgender, it is useddifferently and has several meaning. In most instances, it is used torefer to all the individuals who interestingly do not acknowledgetheir assigned gender at birth or who do not appreciate the binarygender system (International Spectrum, n.d). The terms is applicableto the transsexuals, the genderqueer, the drag kings, thecross-genders or even the two-spirit individuals. For some of thetransgender individuals they have a feeling that they exist in morethan of the two standard gender categories but instead theirexistence is somewhere in between, or at times beyond or even outsidethe known two genders.
Why is there discrimination and prejudice against these people?
Individualsare often discriminated against as they are thought to be abnormaland are not following the societal norms. Also, most of the societiesthat discriminate see the GLBT as outcast in the society who do notcommand and deserve any form of respect at all. The other reasons whythe members of GLBT experience marginalization is because the laws atfederal level, state level or even at territorial level do notprovide for the gay and lesbian people same protection against allthe types of discrimination. A case in point is that Tasmania andQueensland have no kniwn legislative protection in place while on theother hand, Victoria is known to have put different mechanisms andlaws for the protection of this group of individuals (Better HealthChannel, n.d). The other reason why these individuals arediscriminated against is because there is reduced access to themedical care in comparison to the heterosexuals. For most individualsin the society, the perception of sexualism is inclined towardsheterosexism. Having this kind of perception only means thatindividuals do not believe in the other forms of sexuality and treatthe other forms as unacceptable.
What is being done to end discrimination and prejudice against GLBT people?
Differentgovernments are striving to have in place the legal recognition andprotection of the rights of individuals as a powerful means throughwhich the health and welfare of the GLBT people are protected (UNHR,n.d). Different states are also enforcing diverse rules andregulations that seek to protect individuals from homophobic andtransphobic forms of violence. The laws are also meant to safeguardagainst and prevent the torture and cruel as well as inhuman anddegrading treatment of persons. Some of the laws that are in placeconsidred to be discriminatory in nature are being repealed. Thelegal action is to ensure that all the persons are treated equallyand with utmost respect (UNHR, n.d). Individuals are alsoincreasinglhy being discouraged from discriminating others based onsexual orientation and their gender. The other mesdaure in place issafeguarding of individuals freedom of expression, their freedom ofassociation and peaceful assembly.
