Symbolicinteractionism is whereby people rely and develop upon symbolicinteraction. People behave according to what they believe and havebeen living according to. We use socially constructed meanings tofigure out who to interact with. Society all in all is made up ofhuman interpretation. Marriage has been defined and redefined overthe centuries, and there is no sure definition today out of the changes occurring inthe institutions ofthe wedding.Mainly, though, marriage is defined as the sexually independentromantic union between man and woman whose purpose is to produceheirs. Ancient marriages were polygamous whereby men had severalwomen, and today it`smonogamous. Religion got involved when imperial law collapsed inthe old Rome. The power of the church in has grown over marriage and was declaredone of the church’s sacramentsofbaptism and penance. Marriage is to be performed in public by thepriest before witnesses.
Wealso have marriages between same-sex, gays and lesbians, accepted bythe law recently. The gays, thoughare still fighting to exist in the church as it is consideredunchristian, sin before God and an abomination. Marriages of todayconsist of same faith, interracial, same race, polygamy, and alsosame sex. Cohabitation is more of a trial marriage, whereby twopeople try to live together and see if they can coexist throughcompromise. It seemslikea good idea. However, cohabitation is linked to high divorce rates. The probability that acohabiting couple will end up divorcing is greaterthan those living apart during the courtship period. Once divorced, this leads to the remarriageof people, and some remarriages include, same-sexunions, straight couples and even transgender and straight unions.God hates divorce and cohabitation arewrong according to religion, its only married persons that shouldlive together.
Thefamily unit traditionally consists of the father, mother, and children. Today, out of changes in marriage institution thefamily structures have changed too. Structures that we have todayare, two-parent, one-parent, and same-sexparents. God sent us to earth to procreate, but how will gay peopledo so? There is a problem on how the structure of the familyis. Children raised by one parent have a high chance of doing wellacross measures compared to those raised by two parents.
Diversityis the new normal in families in the western countries today. Thepast family structure is a mother, father and children and the children were out of marriage. Today fourin ten children are born tosingle mothers. We also have other family make-upstwoparentsin the firstmarriage, twoparentsin remarriage, cohabiting parents and also no parent. In a case wherethere is no parent the child normally goes to a foster care home or achildren’s home.
Religionis well-known by people and what is expected of them, however, people do as they wish because they focus so much more ontheir own interpretations and what makes them comfortable. Educationand religion are factors that have affected family and marriagetoday. Mothers of today, especially the educated ones, are nothomemakers as they are focused on playing the breadwinners role. Themothers want to stay at their workplaces and buy dinner for thefamily instead of a cookas it was traditional.Spouses attending church have a higher percentage of divorcing ascompared to spouses staying at home and learning through thetelevision. The quality of marriage is dependent on how often as afamily you go to church, families going to church together endurelong-time happiness. Fidelity is less among the church goers and highamong the educated people.
Youngadults brought up in the church do not engage in premarital sex andthe youth educated adults are the “know it all” and participatein illegal activities, premarital sex leading to teen pregnancies, and also drugs. The youth know the harmfuleffects of drugs and alcohol, however, they engage in it because it is cool and no one likes beingseen as uncool. Hence it is in the baby-boom peer group where theoffspring are being brought up thus challenged with the duties thatcome with parentage(Nancy Tatom Ammerman & Roof, 2014).
