In the Units 3 and 4Discussions, you created a thesis statement that offered a solutionto a problem in your community or workplace. In this unit’sAssignment, you will revise and evaluate the effectiveness of thatthesis using the Toulmin Model.
Part I: First of all,you will revise the provisional thesis statement “DurhamNC needs sidewalks to keep kids safe, promote physical fitness, andincrease property values.” Makesure the thesis is concise (1–2 sentences) and includes two parts:a proposal for solving a problem and a reason that solution isneeded. For more on creating effective persuasive thesisstatements, review the following Writing Center resources:
“Give Your Paper Direction: Developing a Strong Thesis Statement”
“Writing a Thesis for a Persuasive Essay”
Write your revised two-partthesis statement here, and be sure to include a claim + reason (the“because” or “since” clause):
Due to frequent accidents onroads involving kids and motorist and the poor physical health of thecitizens of Durham NC, the county government should review itstransport budget to cater for sidewalks. DurhamNC should set aside 10 percent of its annual transport budget toconstruct sidewalks that will improve the safety of kids, thephysical fitness of other pedestrians, and property value of roads.
What type of claim doesthis represent?
The type of claim in thisthesis is the claim about value
Part II: Next, describehow you will use the appeals of logos, ethos, and pathos to make yourargument more compelling to your audience. You can review theWriting Center resource on the appeals here: “TheThree Appeals of Argumentative Writing
Applying the appeal of logos, the government has always allocated a large percentage of its budgetfor the fiscal year on human services, education, and capitalfinancing. It is, therefore, a high time the budget plannersconsidered the safety of the students who attend the schools. Thecontinuous death of kids on roads will render the schools empty.
Applying the appeal of ethos, many people may oppose my argument on such a small project. However,a nation or town starts developing by ensuring the safety of itspeople. The budget of Durham shows a continuous increase in budgetallocation for education forgetting about the personnel who willattend the schools. For the last 3 years, the budget on transport hasremained at $12,500 that represents about 0.0% of the total budget(Modlin, 2016).
Based on pathos, what wouldbe the significance of huge funding to cultural activities andstructural development when the citizens continue to suffer fromobesity and other lifestyle diseases due to lack of physicalexercise? The property value will definitely increase if there arehealthy and quality laborers working on the structural projects(Modlin, 2016). Let us provide sidewalks to start realizing apositive change in the structure and reputation of our state.
Part III: Identify theparts of your argument based on the Toulmin Model. For more on theToulmin Model, review the following Writing Center resources:

“How to Support an Argument and Avoid Logical Fallacies”
Claim: The introduction of sidewalks by Durham county government willimprove the safety of kids along the roads, improve the physicalfitness of pedestrians, and raise the value of roads.
Warrant(assumption): Since the express roads are the largest source ofaccidents to kids, as opposed to water and air, construction ofsidewalks would greatly have an impact on combating daily accidentsin addition to providing a space for physical fitness to thepedestrians.
Qualifiers: How strongly doyou believe in the argument? Would any qualifiers be beneficial? Whyor why not?
Sidewalksare always effective in controlling accidents among kids andmaintaining physical fitness of any user. A government that considerssideways in its budget and implements the project is likely toimprove the safety of kids and physical fitness of its citizens.
Grounds:The poor government planning on transport is the source of deaths ofpedestrians due to lack of sidewalks.
Backing(for the warrant): The cost of constructing sidewalks is lowerthan overpasses or underpasses and materials are readily available.Unless there is an evidence of the contrary, sidewalks have nonegative impacts on the users and can fit the physically challengedtoo.
Rebuttals:Very few accidents are witnessed in less populated areas where fewvehicles transit the highways therefore, the sidewalks may only beconstructed in dense parts of the region.
Identify at least onelogical fallacy to which your argument may be susceptible and how youwill avoid that fallacy. For more on logical fallacies, reviewthe Kaplan University Writing Center resource “Howto Support an Argument and Avoid Logical Fallacies.”
My argument may be subjectedto a fallacy that people can attend gym session to gain physicalfitness. However, some people are not financially stable to pay forsuch sessions while others may lack time to attend exercise sessions. Some kids are less fortunate and unable to afford daily rides toschool.
In conclusion, when thegovernment sets aside funds to construct sidewalks, it will indeedshow concern to its citizens. The kids will find comfort intraversing through the busy highways to school. Those who cannotafford gym session will carry out the physical exercise on the freesidewalks. The sidewalks will add value to the roads and will be anevidence of structural development in the city of Durham.
