The story is a narration about Roderick and Madeline, his twinsister. The two are both suffering from a strange illness that hasbeen attributed to the intermarriage in the family. Roderick isportrayed to be suffering from a condition known as “morbidacuteness of the senses” (Poe, 2003). Similarly, his sisterMadeline is experiencing gradual wasting of her conscious andfeeling. The Elements of Fiction that would be discussed are thesetting and characters.
The setting of the story begins on “…dull, dark, and soundnessday in the autumn of the year” (Poe, 2003). The story illustratesthe events that take place in the house of Usher that issignificantly described and serves as the point of reference. Thehouse is described as being large.
“The room in which I found myself was very large and excessivelylofty”… (Poe, 2003).
The second element of fiction is on the characters. The narrativefocuses on Roderick and Madeline as the main characters. The two aredescribed as being the sole heirs of the Usher family. However, thereis a third character who is portrayed as Roderick’s friend. Thedeath of Madeline out of the sickness saw Roderick admit to hisfriend that she was his twin sister.
Indeed, the story is engaging considering the themes it isillustrates. It can be described as a footprint of what happens inthe society. The illness faced by the two takes a toll on bothRoderick and Madeline depicting their worry. The fear engulf them andmakes it difficult for them to lead a normal life. The significanceof the story, 150 years from its introduction can be attributed tothe manner in which it was described.
In conclusion, the “Fall of the House of Usher” is an interestingtale that can be recommended to anybody. The plot is interesting andthe author has taken keen notice in passing the message to thereaders. It is a story worth reading.
