PoliticalParties and their Interests
The2016 presidential election in the United States of America will notbe forgotten quite soon. This election will, particularly, beremembered for presenting the first serious female contender who waslargely favored to win the election. Moreover, the victor, DonaldTrump, managed to win regardless of all the inauspicious conditionsand scandals that hit his campaign endeavor. He will be remembered asthe presidential candidate who approached the electorate with hatespeech and, most notably, said that he would not accept the resultsif he did not emerge the winner. However, the election set theplatform of questioning how the electoral process in the UnitedStates of America functions and whether it is error free.
Theelectoral system in the United States of America is known all overthe world to be ideal system (Lim 12). It emphasizes on the ideologyof democracy in which the eligible US citizens are allowed to electleaders to various positions within the government. To begin with, the basic electoral flaws that were revealed in the just concludedelection are the two party structure of the US. The two include theRepublican and Democrat parties. There are other political partiesthat exist in the United States however, they are not that popular. Most importantly they have never presented a competitive candidate tocontest for the presidency (England 1). Therefore, the electorate hadto choose between the two candidates that were nominated by theirvarious parties. It was quite clear that both were not perfectbecause they both had serious questions concerning their integrity tooccupy the most powerful office in the world.
Donaldtrump, won the election by assuring electorate that he will makeAmerica again. He based his campaign on the fact that the Obamaadministration had made the US to be taken for granted in the worldscene. He argued that the illegal immigrants mostly from LatinAmerica and Africa should be deported. Their rapid rise of Chinaeconomically was another ideological card that Trump used to getelected. He promised to tame China’s ever increasing significanceby mainly bringing back the manufacturing of goods back to America. To add to his ideological battle, the media helped to cheer him upwherever he said something. As news of alleged assault of women camein, the people tended to believe that he was the man to salvage thecountry. Trump’s victory can largely be attributed to theideological approach that he gave the campaign.
Theelectoral system should undergo close review so as to diminish thechanges of incompetent leaders holding the presidency. For instancethe electoral collage system that gave Trump victory should bedropped. Democracy stipulates that anyone who manages to gather themost support emerges the winner. However, with the Electoral Collegesystem, it is not necessary that the one who get the most approvalfrom the electorate becomes the winner. Minus the system, Trump couldnot have become the president of the United States of America.
Thecampaign finance reform is a political undertaking in the US that isaimed at reducing the money involvement, specifically in thepolitical campaigns. The ideology behind this approach is the factthat money can be used to corrupt the electorate. During politicalcampaigns, the candidates usually acquire money either from sponsorsor conducting fundraisings. The electoral body has the task toevaluate the amount of money each candidate uses and ensures that itis in line with the constitution. However, it has proven a hard taskto know exactly what amount various politicians use. The fact that anindividual can open numerous accounts makes it a big challenge todetermine the amount used, and for what purpose. In trying to achievethe electoral sanity, reforms in the electorate are most preferred. However, there can be many other areas of this process that can bechanged.
Afterevery census, on the other hand, there is a redistricting ofpolitical boundaries that takes place. The state of California is themost affected because its demographics tend to change at a very fastrate. It is crucial to the electoral process because it helps toreshape the boundaries based on the demographics (Buchler 439).However, when it comes to the electoral reforms, the campaign financereforms are more functional than the redistricting changes.Redistricting aids to curb the population aspect of elections becauseit allows states to have the required number of people.
