Writinga proposal on a particular subject was one of the greatestexperiences I had in handling English 102. At first, I thought theprocess would consume a lot of my academic time since proposalwriting is associated with conduction of intensive research. However, the time I spent in writing the proposal did not consume too muchtime to affect my academic pursuits. Instead of losing time, I gaineda lot of research skills. Apart from gaining experience on reportwriting, analyzing information from diverse sources, and findingmaterial off the internet, my critical thinking ability broadenedbecause of writing the proposal. Similarly, my interaction with otherpeople including teachers and students increased as a result of theproposal assignment. In most cases, I sought guidance from myteachers and students who had written proposals before on how towrite my proposal. The interaction with students as a result of theassignment enabled me to develop teamwork skills. Before writing theproposal, I thought learning alone is very productive. However, tackling the proposal enabled me to understand the importance ofteamwork in doing almost everything.
Theclose association with my classmates allowed me to developcommunication skills. In fact, I attribute my current activeness andinteractive communication to my service learning experience.Similarly, I learned something important from one of my classmates’proposal the contributions of Louisiana to the United States havedeclined significantly because of human activities and theintroduction of nutria rat to Louisiana. Just like human activities, nutria rat causes coastal erosion. From the proposal, I learned thatthe nutria rat’s high rate of breeding and consumption ofvegetation around the coastline facilitated soil erosion. The ratsconsumed the entire plant, living only mud that is often eroded bytides. Moreover, I learned that the experienced flooding in Louisianais as a result of erosion that is caused by loss of vegetation alongthe coastline. One of the solutions to the flooding problem accordingto that proposal was to plant marsh grasses in addition to othervegetation with extensive root systems in the affected areas.
Thedecision to plant of marsh grasses including giant cutgrass as wellas giant bull brush along Dawson Creek’s shoreline was encouragingand very educative. For instance, I learned about the importance ofsharing a problem with other people in the society. Apart fromcommunicating with other students, we decided to seek assistance fromother stakeholders of Dawson Creek on how to execute our project. Italso provided us with the opportunity of expanding our teamwork andnoting things that could assist in executing our project. We allowedother classmates to join our group so that we can execute our projectsuccessfully. Thus, execution of the project made us learn thatcooperation with other members of the society including wildlife andfisheries is very important in carrying out any project that touchesthe lives of every person in the society.
Proposalwriting needs to be part of English 102 classes as well as otherclasses. In making it part of the classes, students will have towrite the proposal once in their lifetime in college. Apart fromtriggering the innovativeness of students, the service learningexperience will facilitate the gaining of new skills and expansion ofknowledge in specific areas. Students will learn not only to work ingroups but also develop communication skills. Similarly, the learningprocess will increase students’ awareness of things that affecttheir countries and the world today to come up with solutions. Also, writing proposals will encourage students’ participation in dealingwith issues affecting their societies.
Inconclusion, proposal writing is necessary for English 102 and otherclasses. Through writing projects, students learn new skills andincrease their knowledge. The process also offers students theopportunity of solving some problems that affect the society.Participating in some projects also provide the students with theopportunity to interact with other members of the society.
