Educationis something that has been my driving force as a young girl. Throughthis, I learned to appreciate the benefits associated with educationin a world that is constantly progressing regarding knowledge andtechnology. As I was pursuing my undergraduate, it came to myrealization that education is an eye opener. In our community, NewJersey, education was not valued, but amidst the negativeenvironment, I still made my way out to pursue an Associate’sdegree at a community college. In addition to this, children were notbeing taken to school after reaching a certain level. This wasbecause the majority of the people around were financially crippled. It was a society where people lived with codes like doas I say not as I do, respect your elders, go to school, stay out ofjail and avoid teenage pregnancy. With these rules, the children had no motivating factor of completingtheir education. There was nobody getting involved in the academicarena of these children. As a result, they became free birds whocould go places they want, involve themselves in activities theywanted with a perspective that they never get into jail and getpregnant. Young girls were greatly affected with these ordeals. In asociety like this, girls are very vulnerable to attacks such as rape, domestic violence, and early marriages (Tanabe, Tanabe, & Tanabe,2009). For a young lady with dreams to pursue her educational goals, surviving in a community of this kind was a demotivating factor andcould kill your aspirations of being a light to your family and thecommunity at large. As a young girl with love for education andachieving my dreams, through thick and thin I had to find my way tothe top, to struggle up the ladder with lots of hardship and very fewopportunities and resources that were available within the family andthe society.
Whilein the community, I lived by the simple rules that existed. Althoughit was a tough experience for a young girl with dreams. In thiscommunity, my aunt was the only member of my family to graduate fromcollege and my uncle was the only person to own a home. We were notthat fortunate with wealth, but the two are the minority of thepeople who have gotten a taste of what it means to be successful. This has made them have a voice in the community and to be respected. However, other people to get any source of inspiration from this. Formy aunt and uncle to achieve this, they went a lot of hardship andstruggled to be better. To get a well purposeful life where theycould draw their joy from. My aunt and uncle always advise me to findways in which I could make my life a better one than they had. Theyalso do tell me to make sure I know how to look for opportunitiesthat life has to me. In addition to this, there is one statement thatkeeps driving me, in words from my aunt, ‘your world doesn’trevolve around this village, there is a better world of opportunityout there.` This statement meant a lot to me, and I had to find outwhat was there to explore. Therefore, I had to make my dreams aliving reality just like my aunt and also be as successful as bothaunt and uncle. This will include getting educated and making a homefor my daughter.
Pursuingmy Associate degree is not a smooth path as a student. This isbecause, as a single mother I have to work for long hours to takecare of my family and also to support my education. There were lotsof financial hardship that I had to face as I was in college. As astudent I have a full time job that has been helping me to raisefunds which is being used to take care of my daughter and also someportion of the other money to be used for the tuition fees. Throughall these struggles, as a single parent, I worked extremely hard tocreate a life of intrinsic values and substance for my daughter andmyself. In so doing this, I had to face all odds and register for mystudies at a local community college. Looking at my daughter and thelife I dreamt of her, I had to look for opportunities to further mycareer and also achieve my career goal. This was to be a betterversion of myself and explore the statement that my aunt used to tellme.
Growingup in an environment where paying for my tuition fees and survivingas a lady with dreams, I knew I had to choose a life where I had todo the best I can to achieve it. This would involve taking my careerto the next level. In addition to this, I was forced to leave NewJersey to look for a better life in Henrico, Virginia. Apart from myaunt, there was no any source of academic inspiration in our village, and my dream was to bring out the fact that with hard work anddetermination one can be educated and become successful. This willentail bringing to their attention that there is a great world ofopportunities if one has the will and the power to go beyond thecomfort zone. From this achievement, I hope I will be a source ofinspiration to the community once I get funds which will catapult meto achieve my educational goals. With a little more determination, itwould be possible to take it to the next level, and that’s a Ph.D.If there are resources for this to happen. But I believe, there isalways a bright light at the end of the tunnel.
Iam a student currently pursuing an Associate degree and hope tofurther my education to the next level. Throughout my undergraduatestudy, I learned how important it was to further my knowledge to helpme build my career to the next level and widen my careeropportunities in a very competitive world. I wanted to be one of thewomen within the community who would bring change within our society, and this meant furthering my knowledge in career and creating moreavenues where I can meet individuals to help me bring the change oursociety needs. The academic exposure that we so need. With the helpto complete my Bachelor’s degree and Master’s program, I believethe opportunity you will have given me to explore my career goal willbe reciprocated to future generation not only from my society but forany needy student with a dream to make the world a better place andachieve his/her dreams. This will include helping my 16-year-olddaughter whom I can’t even to pay her forthcoming school fees asshe is to join college soon. In addition to this, I do engage myselfin community programs to ensure that I help motivate people like mewith the dream to excel in life no matter the difficult moments theyface in life. This involved teaching them about what I have learnedin my pursuit of education and success.
Inconclusion, being a single parent life hasn’t been an easy thing. Ihave been trying to balance between the affairs of my daughter, trying to be there as a parent and also trying to pursue my dreams asa student. With this devotion and determination, I have dedicated mylife towards completing my career goals as I take care of my family.Achieving my career goal is not going to be possible due to lack offunds that will help me further my studies. My family back at homecannot be in a position to help me raise the full amount of tuitionfees that is required for furthering my studies. I have been andalways a hard working student and also a dedicated parent. From this, investing in my studies won’t make you regret funding me for thesponsorship. As a single parent, I know the benefits of beingeducated in a community where children are left to fetch forthemselves, I know the benefits of educating a child in a worlddriven by knowledge and technology. It’s a where educationalqualification and skills will help you in building your career andbeing able to create change however much the change is small.
Withthe scholarship funds, my career goal is to complete my educationalgoal and then continue to the next level. I have planned so that bythe time I will be starting to carry out my research my daughterwill be in a position to stay with my aunt who is a source ofinspiration to her and also a source of joy because my young daughterenjoys the company of my aunt. This will also make her learn from myaunt on how she has managed against all odds to get educated in sucha cruel society. My aunt will also help me in bringing her up to be aresponsible grown up lady, and this will entail a proper parenting. This approach is due to the fact that I would not want my daughter togrow up in such a neighborhood I grew up in. I would want to buildher a future where she has full access to educational facilities andan environment where she can learn to be competitive and dedicated tothe things that she has for her personal development and also for thebenefit of the society.
Asa single mother who works full-time a week to raise funds for theupkeep of my daughter and the payment for my tuition fees, theassistance offered will be highly appreciated as I supplement with myextra job. Your investment in me won’t bring any disappointments. Iam a student who believes in hard work and achieving goals to abetter tomorrow.
Thankyou for your consideration.
