Inmanagement, there are various leadership approaches which indeedhelps in the streamlining of various facets of management structures. The three well known approaches to leadership are trait, style andskill leadership approach (Northouse,2015).The main aim of this reflexive essay is to unveil principlefoundations of one of the leadership approaches as I reflect it on mywellbeing as a leader in the nursing fraternity. Notably I willdiscuss the skills leadership approach and relate to my personalexperiences as I provide insights on its importance to anorganization.
Asa leader using the skills approach, I have three sets of skills thatallows me to effective exemplify my leadership qualities. Theseskills entail the human, technical, and conceptual skills. Theconceptual skills have in most cases given me the ability to workwith ideas and concepts in a more visionary way (Northouse,2015).For example, in participating in a class discussion, I have to giveanswers that have a wider perspective of meaning like understandingthe situation of a patient from both the economic, mental andspiritual perspective. from my experience, the human skills haveallowed me to work with my colleagues. Notably it has made meunderstand the personality traits of various individuals around andthe best way to deal with them. For example, I would let the cholericindividuals in the group win in a discussion as they will stop atnothing to be undisputed. Another vital skill that has helped here isthe technical skills. As a nurse student, I have l am quite skilledin surgery work which indeed helps me have the expert authority overothers thereby exhibiting high sense of leadership in it.
Oneof my strengths as I exhibit skills leadership approach is the factthat I am required at different levels of the organization hence itoffers me a vast opportunity of not only understanding myself butalso exploring various skills for self-growth and development. Beinga skills leader has allowed me to learn more skills which indeed hasmade me become a stronger leader day by day (Yammarino,Salas, Serban, Shirreffs, & Shuffler, 2012).The skills I own positions me to an echelon that appeals to many thusincreasing my influence as a leader. I am also able to incorporatevarious components apart from traits which allows me to growwholesomely as a leader. It is also from this leadership approachthat I am able to provide a structure of leadership training andeducation to my subjects (Northouse,2015).One weakness I usually experience here is the fact that I lean moreon skills and give less effort to the fundamental tenets ofleadership. In as a much as I would love to have the expertauthority, the influence will not be felt effectively since lessinput is given in sharpening my leadership skills. Additionally, Icannot quite clearly discern how each component of skills effects myperformance.
Basedon my experience with the skills leadership approach, I would like toimprove on social judgment since I believe that social judgmentexhibit more superior leadership quality than knowledge. For example, while trying to allocate work to various employees I would not onlylook at skills but also gender balance, diversity and inclusion anddisability status among others.
Ihave learnt that skills leadership approach is very important whenyou have, the conceptual, human and technical skills. This approachleans more on exemplification of skills to earn a leadership control. It has the weakness of not appealing to the social judgment which isvery critical for leadership qualities. I plan to develop my socialleadership skills in order to be an all-round and effective leader.
