ReflectionFuture of Nursing
TheIOM report aimed at ensuring that the nurses play a bigger role inthe provision of quality healthcare. The report made severalrecommendations which called for the increase in the number of nurseswith a higher level of education. Increasing the level of educationamong nurses improves the patients’ outcomes. Additionally, highlycompetent nurses are better-positioned to cooperate effectively withother healthcare practitioners such as physicists and social workers.
Recommendation4: Increase the Proportion of Nurses with a Baccalaureate to 80% by2020.
Iam confident that I am contributing immensely to increasing thepercentage of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80% by 2020.Currently, I am pursuing a degree in nursing and I hope to completemy studies by 2020. Additionally, I have influenced several of mycolleagues to enroll for a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Forinstance, two of these individuals will be graduating in 2018. Theirgraduation will help increase the proportion of nurses with abaccalaureate degree to 80% by 2020.
Recommendation5: Double the Number of Nurses with a Doctorate by 2020
Besides,my actions will contribute in doubling the number of nurses with adoctorate in nursing by 2020.Byenrolling for a degree in nursing, I am increasing the demand forindividuals with a doctorate in the same field. Consequently, morepeople are motivated to advance their education by the demand fornursing lecturers created by individuals such as myself.Additionally, my action of enrolling for a nursing degree will putpressure on people with master`s degree in the same field to advancetheir education to avoid the competition posed by individuals likemyself in the job market.
Recommendation6: Ensure that Nurses Engage in Lifelong Learning
Someof the ways through which I can contribute to ensuring that nursesengage in lifelong learning include taking part in continuingeducation such as by attending conferences and enrolling for onlinecourses. According to Smith (2003), continuing education includesshort professional courses, in-service training, and formal academiccourses. Additionally, I will seek to share what I have learned withmy colleagues in addition to joining a professional organization.
IdentifyYour Options in the Job Market Based on Your Level of Education
Althougha large proportion of individuals with nursing degree work inhospitals, others find jobs in the military, prisons, nursing carefacilities, private clinics, and schools (Garner, 2012). I amplanning to acquire a master’s and Ph.D. in nursing to clinch mydream job which is to be an instructor in a college or university.
HowWill Increasing Your Education Affect How You Compete in the JobMarket?
Increasingmy level of education will help me acquire knowledge in leadership, public health, research, evidence-based practice, systemimprovements, and public health. Besides, according to Garner (2012),continuing education helps nurses acquire knowledge to use complexinformation systems that require healthcare practitioners to haveanalysis skills to improve effectiveness and quality of care. Thiswill put me in a better position to work in diverse fields.
HowWill Increasing Your Education Affect Your Role in Nursing?
Accordingto Garner (2012), competencies needed to practice nursing haveexpanded greatly. Besides, Forsetlundet al., (2009) argue thateducational meetings in addition to other interventions can improvehealth care outcomes for the patients. Consequently, increasing mylevel of education will improve healthcare outcomes for the patients. Also, I will be in a better position to make critical decisionsregarding care for frailer patients in addition to working withsophisticated yet life-saving technology. Additionally, according toGarner (2012), increasing their level of education helps nurses toplay a more active role in multi-disciplinary care teams which callfor them to collaborate with other healthcare professionals such aspharmacists, social workers, physical therapists, and physicians.Additionally, advancing my level of education will improve patientoutcomes when I am requested to act as the primary care provider.
Inconclusion, the Future of Nursing report hopes to encourage nurses toadvance their education by enrolling in programs leading tobachelor’s degrees and other certifications that will equip themwith knowledge and skills to offer quality healthcare services to thepublic. I am playing a pivotal role in achieving the recommendationsthat the IOM report sets by enrolling for a bachelor’s degree innursing and encouraging my colleagues to advance their education.
