Itis gratifying for one to know that he or she assisted a child and afamily during the moments of health challenges regarding cancer.Besides, it is also emotionally heart-breaking to lose a child thatone has bonded in the processes of oncology nursing, which primarilyaims to prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer. The essay, therefore, provides a reflection on why I am interested in pediatric oncologynursing, the nursing career goals as well as the way nursingfellowship will be fundamental in attaining the goals.
WhyI am Interested in Pediatric
Asa young person, I had the desire to work with children of diverseages, especially those who have cancer, thus making pediatriconcology my leading area of interest and specialization. Although thecareer appeared heart-breaking at first because of its involvementwith children with cancer, that was neutralized by the rewardingexperience in which I combined my passion for treating cancer with mylove for children. Besides, pediatric oncology involves making adifference in children’s lives by helping them through their mostconstraining moments of cancer attacks. That, coupled with the joyand honor that follows at the end of caring for such patients, formthe bulk my interest for pursuing pediatric oncology nursing. Lastly,my desire to communicate with children of varied ages has alsocontributed in my interest for pediatric oncology, as it is the rightplace to relate with and care for the young individuals who havecancer.
Thefirst objective concerning pediatric oncology would be to providepassionate care as the patients make the top priority in theprofession. Noticeably, children diagnosed with cancer often suffer asevere emotional breakdown, and their futures seem to be too painfulto recognize in their sight. As an oncology nurse, it is imperativeto be sensitive to their needs and offer every necessary support, such as attending to their pain and offering to counsel them. Thesecond goal relates to the patient advocate, whereby the nurseoperates in close relationship with the physicians to develop atreatment plan for the patients, as well as to supervise treatments. In other words, it is important for nurses to monitor the progress oftheir clients, listen to them, and take every concern with a seriousnote. The next goal of the nurse career would be to get updated withthe current global advances, for example, treatment techniques, theevolution of drugs and the detection of cancer, which would bepossible with further training and development.
Howthe Nursing Fellowship Will Assist in Attaining the Goals
Nursingassociations are vital in providing major career opportunities andtools which help in the development of the graduates and experiencednurses. First, the fellowships will ensure that compassionate healthcare and quality services get instilled in the nurses as one of thegreatest objectives of pediatric oncology. Furthermore, suchfellowships will be critical in making nurses understand their rolesas patients’ advocates. Precisely, nurses should focus on patientsas whole individuals while making sure that the clients comprehendand accept the phases of treatment as the best approaches for hope inlife, and such areas are exploited in fellowships.
Itis worth noting that patients make the top priority in pediatriconcology nursing thus, all nurses should offer passionate care tochildren diagnosed with cancer. My passion as a pediatric oncologistrelies on my love for children and the peace that comes with theirtreatment it would be my lifetime career, which I aim to enhancethrough fellowships.
