Ihave aspired to pursue a career that offers me an opportunity todevelop what I am passionate about within a professional set-up. Imade a choice to study Occupational Therapy (OT) as an avenue tomaximally exploit my potential as a valuable tool to impact humanwelfare. As an individual who is keen on supporting others, a careerin occupational therapy will offer an opportunity for a clientfocused support system that has clear goals to address the cognitive,physical or emotional challenges that may hinder an individual topursue his/her daily activities.
Myimmediate professional goal is to work in a multi- cultural setupthat offers an opportunity to apply an integrated disciplinaryapproach towards human good. Pursuing a career in occupationaltherapy will offer an opportunity to help recovering individual.These are culturally integrated settings that apply variouseducational disciplines in their day to day activities. Occupationaltherapy is practiced in hospitals, workplaces, nursing care centres,schools and in homecare services. In studying occupational therapy, Iwill have the potential to be exposed in all these setting.
Ihave a long-term professional goal to establish a recovery supportcentre that will focus on people of all ages. The centre will offerskills to address the ever changing physical and cognitive challengesthat affect humanity. I intend to do this by engaging people on thegrounds of what is important to them and the benefits of acquiringthe identified professional needs. Studying occupational therapy willfacilitate the acquisition of the specific skills in establishing andrunning a recovery centre that helps people undergo a physical orcognitive recovery within the appropriate timelines.
Ihave an outgoing personality with excellent communication andlistening skills. I am also proficient in Spanish language. Theseskills prepares me for an occupational therapy career where I caneffectively engage with people, win their trust and guide themthrough the recovery process. My strong analytical skills will alsobe important in establishing the client specific occupational therapyneeds while relating the process with the ultimate end of regainingthe ability to perform their desired roles.
Myperformance in the junior and senior high school levels have beenabove average. I have performed well in sciences, arts and languagesubjects. The skills I have acquired from these disciplinesadequately prepares me for a career in occupational therapy thusenabling me pursue my passion in assisting people to recover fromvarious sensory or mental challenges.
Iam currently an Occupational therapy assistant working in paediatricout-patient setting with children who have physical and mentaldisabilities. I have also acquired experience in, rehab work, speechtherapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy in orthopaedic andintensive care units. I have participated in various sportingactivities that have improved my physical fitness. This prepares mefor the intensive physical activities in occupational therapy. Theteam spirit, resilience and discipline that I have developed throughthese experiences will enable me pursue a successful career inoccupational therapy
Inconclusion, my skills and abilities present a background that I canbuild a successful occupational therapy career on. I am suitable forthis career that will offer an opportunity to expand my worldviewwhile establishing a mechanism towards creating workplaces andhospitals that offer teaching and support services towards recovery.
