When I came to the US to pursue my high school education, people keptasking me, “Don’t you miss your family?” Over time, I haddeveloped a standard answer that even though I miss being with themphysically, I am grateful for the digital communication that enablesme to video chat with them every Sunday since, despite the distancewe have managed to maintain the family tradition of always being incommunication. I come from a China, but I live in separate citieswith my parents. My father runs a computer system company in anothertown, which makes it difficult to live together. However, he remainsmy role model as he majored in Computer during his studies, a coursethat I am pursuing as well. I must admit the separation has beenbeneficial because it has nurtured me to become a responsible andindependent person. For instance, I live alone, and my parents sendme money for my upkeep. I have learned to budget the cash to ensure Iadequately meet my needs.
The transitioning between the Chinese to the American culture was noteasy. For instance, since my home is far from school, I regularlytake the subway. The mode of travel allows me to sit at the subwaystation and watch as people walk around. The individuals are usuallybusy and in a hurry, which is contrary to how we behave back in mycountry (Nader 171). However, I have embraced diversity and highlyrespect their culture to the extent of even adopting new traits. Iused to be a self-centered person who preferred my company andbelieved I got on well with myself. With time I have discovered thesignificance of friendship and have even found myself concerned aboutother people’s feelings. I am currently studying at Pallotti HighSchool where I have made many new friends. I believe I am moresocial since we always play basketball, and watch football togetherwith my colleagues. The friendship bond is strong as they continue toteach me new things as we grow and move on with our lives.
Besides studying at socializing, I have other interests in life. Forexample, I enjoy reading cooking books that have significantlyassisted in improving my food preparation skills. I like trying outnew recipes, and in this way, I have learned how to cook. I canconfidently say am good at making Chinese foods and with time I willbe proficient in preparing American meals as well. Other activitiesthat I indulge in during my leisure time include keeping fit, listening to music, collecting video games, skydiving, and swimming.I enjoy exercising through working out and running during the nightevery day as it enables me to remain focused and maintain goodhealth.
The different experiences in America have also allowed me to discovermy talents. I can play the Trumpet and the Trombone and even soccer. At my school, I began a Chinese club which enabled me to enhance myleadership skills. Besides, I am an intelligent individual as I tookthe honor class and achieved excellent performance. Studying inAmerica has provided me with challenging opportunities such asadjusting life in New York. However, I have learned and loved theAmerican culture very much. I have enjoyed every bit of my schooltime with the friends I made. I can’t wait to have a better collegelife.
