MyExperience in the Nursing Field
Thenursing field requires one to have more experience on how to takecare of patients and provide first aid measure in case of anyemergency. As nurse students, most of the time we visited hospitalswhich are close to our school environment to gain more techniques onhow to handle patients (Charuai, p625). Under the supervision of ourlecturers and professional nurses we were to practice dailyactivities that are taking place at the nursing center. Students weresubdivided into groups of two to make sure we have enough contactwith professional nurses and ask any question relevant to the field. The clinical centers attend to patients who have different types ofproblems. By that time I had enough skills on matters relating tocaring for children who are below the age of ten. Such children needto be handled with care since they are very delicate when it comes toissues of administering of drugs. When children are given wrongmedicines it may end up affecting entire part of their life, hence wewere trained to make sure that children received the right drug. After few weeks were changing sections within the hospitals so thatwe can have enough information regarding all the activities in thehealthcare (Charuai, p626). My next destination was emergencyroom it was in this room where I was challenged.
Asusual, I arrived at the healthcare early enough so that I could notmiss any practical being carried in this area. We were only fourduring in that day two of us were student nurses and two nurses whowere acting as our instructors in the emergency section.
Theprofessional nurses introduced us on what the department deals withand what type of cares can be obtained in the room. We did notcontinue for a long time since there were patients who were broughtin the hospital under critical conditions which forced the nurses toattend to them. We used that opportunity to discover what happenswhen patients immediately arrive at the healthcare.
Aftera short interval of time, new clients entered the room with a patientwho has been involved in a serious accident and needed an emergencetreatment or else within a few hours the patient would have died. Iwas confused not knowing what to do since the two nurses were busyassisting the other patients. The clients begged us to quickly assisttheir patient since he was in a critical condition and any minutewasted it would be the end of his life. The patient was bleeding allover and even his face was covered with blood. The clients informedus the accident had happened some few hours ago and they took timebefore reaching the healthcare. By that time my heart was beating ata faster pace since I did not know where to start and how to convincethe clients that we are not qualified practitioners. Within a fewminutes, I found myself having the first aid kit on my hand somethingthat I had never done before. I took the necessary tools such asscalpel and bandage and started immediately attending to the patienteven without knowing what is supposed to take place first. I was ableto stop the bleeding through dressing of the wounds and gave thepatient some pain killers to relieve pain. After two hours I was doneand the patient started twisting his leg which gave me assign ofrecovering. When the nurses returned, they were amazed to find that Ihad already assisted and everything was in order. All of themcongratulated me for doing such a wonderful job. Hence, thisexperience helped me to understand that the knowledge which havegained in class and small life skills can be of great importance tosomeone else in this world.
