MartinLuther King Jr. Day
Thisis a public holiday set aside by federal government in honor ofMartin Luther held on third Monday of January. It commemorates hisachievements and life as a staunch advocate of civil rights. Hesupported the end of racial segregation and fronted the ideology thatall men are equal. In honor of this date as youth members of ourchurch, we had planned to visit a nursing home for the elderly.Martin Luther was a spiritual leader, and in his service to humanitywas driven by kindness and compassion. It was for this reason that hecould not sit behind, but opted to use his voice to raise the issuesthat the black society faced. As a result, he triggered a chain ofevents, which led to various movement and later the repealing ofsegregation laws. Therefore, this paper aims to relate the conceptsof Martin Luther’s life with our experience in helping the lessprivileged.
Duringthis day we were engaged in visiting a nursing home for the elderlyin our community. We carried along various gifts and foods, which weshared with the elderly at the facility. Later, after being touredaround, we interacted and chatted with them. We tried to doeverything possible to make them feel loved and that they were notbeing segregated or rejected by the society. Some of them wished thatthey could stay with their loved ones and be often visited, butadmitted that family members we either overwhelmed with work or far.The services provided in this facility and what we did was closelyrelated to health insurance, Medicaid, or pension.
Conclusion
Inhonor of Martin Luther we were kind to the elderly and made themunderstand that all people matter and are important. I learned thatpeople want to feel love and there is no other service greater tohumanity than filling that void.
