Everyonehas a testimony about how life in college changed them in one way orthe other, beneficially or detrimentally. I have one myself. Back inmy foundation years at college, I had a lot of financial needs. Myparents could not provide any extra amount of money aside for moneyfor food. I knew I had to do something. In any case, at 23 years ofage, the society already considered me a man. Men found ways to makemoney. I started looking for a business niche in various fields. Someguys I knew had gone into partnership with local hotel owners so theywould distribute buns and cakes very early in the morning to thestudent’s hostels. Business wasn’t so bad from the much Igathered, I mean, who doesn’t need a bun or two after a tough dayin class. This was a good opportunity. On the downside, a number ofstudents had caught on so that you were bound to find at least adealer in every other hostel at any other time of day or night, yes, these guys did their business 24 hours a day, one always wondered howthey managed to balance academics with business.
Theother option was running a photocopying machine service as studentsalways had assignments and handouts to photocopy. I, however, did nothave a computer nor a printer, and my savings were nothing to writehome about. My ultimate business opportunity, however, arose soonafter. I should mention that I have a penchant for taking goodphotos. Where some were good in front of the camera, I was goodbehind it. I, however, did not have a camera then. There was a friendwho had one but rarely if ever used it. He was one of those who takespride in owning expensive gadgets and flashing it here and there. Iasked him to loan me the camera over the weekends at a small price, this he accepted, but he could not stand being away from his Canon30D for more than 4 hours. So I only had four hours a day, bothSunday and Monday. I remember walking around spots where studentsgenerally hung out on weekends namely, parks, courts, fields, and soon. I would then take photos of them at a fee then edit them inPhotoshop using my friend’s laptop. The latter bit I did for anhour since my friend spent much time using his laptop for hisschoolwork and entertainment. By then, special effects and filters inphotographs were not that popular among local photographers most ofwhom restricted their imagination to taking studio shots. Needless tosay, business caught on, and I increased the price per photo from adollar to two. Within 6 months, I managed to purchase my own cameraand a second-hand computer from a fellow student who had hit rockbottom.
Ithen sought the assistance of a friend who had become fascinated bywhat I did on Photoshop and had aspired to learn the skill. I taughthim the basics then recommended him some YouTube Videos tutorials forthe technical bits. At the end of the day I gave him a smallpercentage of my earnings. Within the next 4 months, I managed toacquire another camera. I also rented a small room which housed mysparsely equipped studio. Never mind the fact that I still had asingle computer in the studio. I however got another student tooperate the second camera. One year since I had began I hadsucceeded in employing five students part-time, got two cameras, acomputer and 3 studio lights.
Ibegan covering social functions such as seminars within campus, birthday parties as well as doing video shoots for weddings. By thispoint in time, other potential photographers within the student bodyhad woken up from their idyllic slumber. I however had the head startand with the help of online tutorials I together with my team hadadvanced our skills in Photoshop and could even simulate advancedspecial effects from movies in our work.
Atthe moment, I am a one year old graduate and run an average sizedstudio within a metropolis with over 10 part time employers who arenewly graduated. I am a firm believer in providing opportunities forothers particularly college students because I have been there beforeso I know how hard it is to manage at times.

Withregard to employees, one needs to respect their individual needs.Instead of imposing rules solely aimed at boosting the company’sprofits, one may perhaps wish to consider if the said rule ordecision would affect the single mother in your employ. Itwould not be in her best interests to have her work extra hours everyday since such a decision directly affects herself and relationshipswith her family.Instead, we could have the boss who always insists on taking hisnewly wedded secretary to consistent business tours work extra hours. WhenI start my business, I would develop a system where my employees havea say in major decisions. I will probably do this by setting upseveral suggestion boxes across the business premises. In this way, employees can freely post suggestions knowing that anonymity isguaranteed. I would then go through the said suggestions and decidehow best I can accommodate them within my business decisions. I wouldalso establish fun days with the employees this will enableemployees to interact with counterparts from different levels withinthe business establishment. What’s more, as a business owner Ishall be able to interact with them at a personal level. I would alsoestablish a system which would enable my business to give back to thesociety this could either be done by creating employment or offeringassistance where necessary.
Inconclusion, business with humanity in mind should focus on communalrather than individual profit. It should aim at employee and communalsatisfaction because these two groups contribute a large percentageto the success of a business.
