Martin Luther King demonstrated some of the powerful leadershipvalues that every person would like to imitate. One of his quotes,“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments ofcomfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challengeand controversy” denotes that the traits of effective leadershipare best recognized when a leader acts accordingly during tough timesand when things are not running smoothly.
Leadership in a time of danger, trouble, and in difficulty is verydifferent from leadership in a time when things are normal (Adair,2011). My experience as a leader in a particular company involved amajor disruption in service. As a leader, I had to act at theearliest possible moment for things to go back to normal. At the lookof things, almost all my team members were nervous. I had to remindthem about the organization’s vision that captivates and unites usall. In a calm manner, I assigned some duties to them and told themto meet me at the boardroom after two hours. When giving themdirections, I ensured that it was done systematically without hurry. After two hours, we met with other team members and each member’sopinion was important because we were able to work together towards asolution. I was also open to different unpopular advice.
Some of the leadership traits that I exhibited during this timeinclude self-confidence, team orientation, and charisma. Theseactions were not a surprise to me because as an effective leader, Iwas always prepared to face any challenge that might come my way. Insome scenarios, I had to employ various leadership styles because Iunderstand that one leadership approach is not practical enough tosolve any given situation. Competent leaders should switch theirleadership styles to match with the type and atmosphere of asituation. There was no other better way that I could have dealt withthe crisis than how I handled it. Adair (2011) observed thatconsistency is paramount in leadership because it ensures that yourfollowers are confident that their leader can manage differentsituations effectively. Moreover, consistency creates harmony amongemployees.
