Knowledgeabout genetics in today’s medicine enables physicians to take apersonalized approach when choosing dosage for patients. Over theyears, pharmacists and researchers have been in a dilemma as to whythe same medications work better for some people and cause sideeffects on others. Even though many factors contribute to thisincluding age, it is evident genetics determine a big percentage of apatient’s reaction towards a certain drug. The understanding ofgenetic differences is critical. This has led to increase of nowadayspharmacogenetic tests carried out on patients. These tests give aguide on how to use certain medications based on the genetics of anindividual. It is part of improved healthcare launched in the USA byPresident Obama (Johnson, 2016). This plan is known as PrecisionMedicine Initiative, which will make personalized treatmentaccessible and available for everyone. It will increase the abilityto cure diseases such as diabetes and cancer while at the same timeenabling people to know information that can help them stay healthy(Johnson, 2016).
Physicianscarry out tests to check variation of genes responsible for creatingliver enzymes that breakdown medicine. It is known as polymorphismsand reduces drug side effects in the body. If the genetic variationsprevent the liver enzymes from breaking down certain drugs, thepatient fails to recover fast. Drugs used are either active orinactive form. For active ones, liver enzymes make them inactive andenable the body to discard them. If the liver enzyme that breaks downa certain drug collapses because of genetic variation, the body isunable to get rid of the active medicine effectively. The drugaccumulates in the body, which leads to advanced side effects. Theinactive medication is broken down into active form. However, if thegene variation causes malfunctioning of the liver enzymes, the drugfails to become active. (Hussar, 2016).
Patientswho undergo gene variation tests are given an alternative drug thatwill not cause them advanced side effects. This reduces fatal medicalcomplications such as heart attacks, strokes and reduces the numberof deaths in general. It goes a long way to show how genetics haveinfluenced medicine today. This approach leads to an excellentapproach to a patient`s treatment and better health as a whole. Thesemethods are being used today when administering cancer drugs. Eventhough in most cases, the genetics of the tumor is tested, not thepatient’s and it enables the physician to pick the rightmedication. In fact, today most approved drugs for cancer treatmentare made for specific tumor genotypes (Hussar, 2016).
Theway genetic information is acquired is expected to change in future.Today, this information is obtained through laboratory tests, whichevaluate specific genes depending on the patient’s medical needs.It is expected that every person’s entire genome will be definedand the information stored for use throughout his or her lifetime.That means doctors will using computerized approaches to put togethertheir knowledge about drugs based on the genetic data provided.However, that is more than a decade from now. Today, genetic testsare only done in some patients to help a physician to reach aninformed decision when prescribing medication especially in cancerpatients (Johnson, 2016).
Geneticsinfluence medicine today, and it is beneficial to patients. Doctorscan give effective medication and individuals get a quick recovery.It is expected to become the norm in all parts of the world in future(Hussar, 2016).
