My thoughts about Healthy Living or Longer life
I think Hughes Ellen discussion is more inclined to the explanationof how to live a healthy life, and she associates this behavior withliving longer. People who live healthy lifestyles are likely to livelonger than people who engage in unhealthy lifestyles (Hughes, 2010).Therefore, longer life span is influenced by healthy living.
Conditions that seem to Prolong Life
Hughes (2010) observed that genes, healthy lifestyles, and being ina society where people tend to live long influences the agingprocess. Gene alterations seem to increase or decrease the lifespanof an individual. Multiple theories of aging like telomeres,oxidative stress, longevity genes, and calorie restriction explainwhy people age. Telomeres stabilize chromosomes ends, not only dothey shorten in response to stress, diseases, and age, but also theylengthen when an individual leads a healthy life, and when he or shehas the ability to manage his or her stress levels. Healthy eatingcounteracts with oxidative stress that poses a risk to age-relateddiseases (Hughes, 2010). Calorie restriction can prolong anindividual’s life by reducing oxidative stress and reducing insulinproduction. Some genes like ABO have been linked to longer living.
Health Practices that Promotes Life Longevity
According to Hughes (2010), people need fewer calories as they getolder than when they are young. Eating less and healthy food toreduce calorie intake and to get healthy nutrients, engaging inregular exercise to burn excessive fats and to keep physically fit,not smoking, having enough sleep by maintaining a sleep cycle that isregular, eating vegetables and fruits, and staying socially connectedare some of healthy practices that might have a hand in progressinglife longevity. Moreover, reducing inflammation to reduce periodontaldisease, managing stress by accepting, relaxing, reflecting, andengaging in meaningful activities like volunteering, ensuringemotional stability, staying mentally active by learning new things,connecting with a higher being, and retaining a healthy weight arealso likely to increase the life expectancy.
