These events brought mysterious, miraculous powersand other supernatural beings that led to the healing of the sick.The healing process was centered on the expulsion of malicious andunseen actions that caused diseases. Then appeals were made to thegods for the cure of the diseases. Others communities used herbs andmaterials extracted from natural sources while others used clays andearth to heal some diseases. Medicine men and women maintained thehealth of the community through the collection and distribution ofherbs.
Mentalhealth reform took place at the end of the 19th century. This reformviewed insanity as any other medical condition that could be managedlike other diseases. Before this reform took place, persons withmental illnesses were housed in or locked up in houses because oftheir inability to cater for their needs.
TheFlexner Report demonstrates the primary deficiencies that exist inthe medical education. Due to its findings, affiliations andcurricula of various medical schools were changed while other schoolswere shut down.
Professionalassociations include American Medical Association that was founded in1847. It came up with the code of ethics and tried to improve thequality of medical education offered by medical traininginstitutions. The American Hospital Association began its operationsin 1848. Its aim was to improve the welfare of the public by ensuringquality health care was provided in hospitals.
Theorganizations that played the largest role include the AmericanOsteopathic Association and the Joint Commission.
Asa result of this rise, the majority of the citizens got privateinsurance as part of their employment benefits. These insurancebenefits enabled Americans to receive quality health care at asubsidized cost. Thus, the healthcare field evolved into one of themajor players in the country’s economy.
Medicareprogram provides health care financing to persons above the age 65years in spite of their financial needs. Medicaid program offershealthcare financing to impoverished people or those who don’t havemeans to cater for their health problems.
TEFRAcame up with measures to contain the cost of healthcare. This programwas known as the prospective payment system.
