GraduateStudy Challenges and Strategies
GraduateStudy Challenges and Strategies
Undergraduatestudies equip students with the basic skills that they need tosucceed in their careers. However, students may choose to enroll ingraduate schools in order to achieve different goals that they feelmay not be possible with the skills and knowledge gained at theundergraduate level. There are many benefits of pursuing a graduatedegree, but it comes with an equal share of challenges. In thispaper, I will discuss my reasons for pursuing the Master’sHealthcare Administration Degree. I will also discuss the long-termand short-term goals that I intend to pursue, challenges that Iexpect to face as well as the strategies to resolve them, andmilestones that will mark the accomplishment of each target. Thepaper will also focus on the analysis of my weaknesses as well asstrengths in communication and strategies that I intend to use toenhance my skills.
Personalas Well as Professional Goals
Manypeople join universities to undertake undergraduate studies withoutadequate knowledge of what it will help them achieve in the future. However, a decision to undertake graduate studies is different and itshould be well informed and based on valid reasons. In my case, thereare two reasons that motivated me to undertake a master’s degree.First, I would like to increase my ability to apply scientificevidence in my career, since the concept of evidence-based practicesis increasingly gaining popularity. The purpose of an undergraduatedegree is to introduce learners into their fields of profession, butgraduate studies help them apply research (Cleary, 2013). The secondreason is the desire to invest in my future. I intend to become anindependent practitioner in the future, but I require the rightknowledge as well as skills. This knowledge can only be acquittedfrom a graduate degree.
Myshort-term goal is to complete a degree in Master’s of HealthAdministration by 2018. The master’s program will give me anopportunity to acquire skills as well as knowledge that will enhancemy competitiveness and productivity at work. The achievement of theshort-term goal will enable me to pursue my long-term ambition ofworking with the geriatric population. In order to work with thispopulation, I intend to pursue a long-term goal, which is to start myown business in the field of Eldercare. The aim of investing inEldercare is to reach the senior citizens across the U.S. and use myknowledge to make a difference in my community.
TheChallenges I Face In Meeting My Goals
Thereare three major challenges that I face as I strive to meet mylong-term as well as the short-term goals. The first challenge is thelack of adequate financial resources to support my graduate educationand the Eldercare organization. I attribute this challenge to thelimited sources of finances, where I mainly rely on support fromrelatives. The second challenge is related to the difficulty ofhiring the right people. Human resource is the most significant assetthat determines the success of the organization and its ability tomanage other factors of production (Farahmand, 2011). Therefore, thelack of the right people in the Eldercare facility could limit myability to achieve the long-term goal. Third, it is quite a challengefor me to establish a brand that will be successful and respected inthe community that I aim to serve through the Eldercare organization. There are other organizations delivering similar services. Thisimplies that the community will benchmark my services with what ithas been receiving in the past in order to determine whether my brandhas any additional value.
Strategiesfor Overcoming the Challenges
Althoughthe aforementioned challenges have the capacity to limit my abilityto meet my goals, they can be resolved successfully. I intend toaddress the challenge of the lack of adequate financial resources bydeveloping the culture of saving in order to create a cash reservethat will be adequate to pursue my goals. In addition, I will enhancemy financial management skills with the objective of increasing myability to achieve my goals using scarce resources. The issue of thedifficulty of finding suitable employees will be resolved throughproper training. This solution is supported by an empirical studyshowing that effective training increases the competencies as well asproductivity of the members of staff (Jahanzeb & Bashir, 2013). Iwill address the challenge of bland building by working tirelesslyand with a passion in order to enhance the image of my organizationin the community.
MilestonesMarking the Achievement of the Goals
Iwill use specific measures to assess the achievement of both thelong-term and short-term goals. The achievement of the short-termgoals will be marked by graduating in 2018 with a master’s degreein health administration. The achievement of the long-term goal willbe marked by the establishment of a company that will make a positivedifference in the lives of the elderly citizens.
TheAnalysis of Weaknesses and Strengths in Personal Communication
Effectivecommunication is among the key determinants of one’s success inpersonal as well as professional life. Although I consider myself tobe a competent communicator, I acknowledge the fact that I have bothweaknesses and strengths that affect the way I interact and shareinformation with others. One of my key strengths is the fact that Iam well organized, which is confirmed by my ability to focus on themain points and share information that meets the expectations of myaudience. I practice organization in formal as well as informationalcommunication. The other strength that enhances my ability tocommunicate is the fact that I am a people’s person. This enablesme to integrate the aspect of interactivity to improve mycommunication.
AlthoughI have the qualities of an effective communicator, I have one majorweakness that I need to work on. Being impatient at times limits myability to pay attention to other parties. This in turn reduces thequality of the feedback that I give since impatience denies me theopportunity to assess the expectations of the other parties and achance to evaluate the information that I intend to share with them.
Strategiesfor Improving Communication
Iintend to apply three key strategies to address my weaknesses andimprove my communication skills. First, I will avoid unnecessaryconversation filters. By removing the filters, I will become morepersuasive in conversation and appear more confident. The removal ofunnecessary filters helps the communicator win the trust of theaudience (Gilbert, 2014). The second strategy will involve animprovement in the listening skills. I intend to enhance my abilityto listen actively, which is associated with an increase in one’scapacity to comprehend issues, demonstrate respect for other parties, and avoid conflicts (Gilbert, 2014). Lastly, I will start watching mybody language in order to ensure that it plays its role in addingemphasis or complementing my verbal communication. A combination ofthe aforementioned strategies will give me an opportunity to enhancethe communication skills that I use in professional and socialsettings.
Thegraduate studies enhance the competitiveness of learners and theirability to translate research into practice. Setting long-term aswell as short-term goals before undertaking the graduate studies isimportant because it help learners focus on programs that arerelevant to their future career or ambitions. In my case, I expect tograduate with a master’s degree in healthcare administration andestablish a health care organization that will specialize in healthissues affecting the senior citizens. Some of the challenges that Iwill face as I pursue my goals include the lack of sufficient funds, difficulty of hiring the right people, and establishing a successfulbrand. Apart from finding viable solutions to the aforementionedchallenges, I will focus on improving my communication skills inorder to increase my success in professional as well as personallife.
