Healtheducators play a critical role in addressing the specific needs of agiven community. Although there are many people who wish to pursue acareer in the field of health care, there are specific qualificationsthat are required in order to ensure that they are able to deliverquality care. In this paper, the requirements as well as theresponsibilities of a Certified Health Education Specialist will bediscussed.
CertifiedHealth Education Specialist
TheCHES designation is used to signify that one has to acquire therequired academic qualifications to be certified as a healtheducation specialist (National Commission for Health EducationCredentialing, Inc., 2016). A qualified CHES is expected to deliver arange of services, including the promotion of healthy lifestyles inthe community design programs that will enhance health outcomesassess the health needs of individuals as well as families andadvocate for the implementation of policies that boost population’swellbeing.
Acombination of academic and professional qualifications is requiredfor one to become a CHES. Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields(such as public health, health education, or health promotion) is abasic requirement. The graduate is required to pass a CertifiedHealth Education Specialist exam (Learn Organization, 2016). However, continuing education is required in order to maintain thiscertification. About 75 continuing education contact hours are neededfor individuals who intend to maintain their CHES certification.
TheImportance of Being Certified
Thereare two key factors indicating the significance of educators beingcertified. First, certification serves as an indication of theircommitment to health education and the profession as a whole.Secondly, certification enhances the level of credibility of theeducators in the community (NCHEC, 2016). They spend most of theirtime with members of the community as they try to identify andresolve the needs of individuals as well as families. These communitymembers are more likely to trust educators who are certified thanthose who are not.
TheResponsibilities that are Expected of the Health Educators
Theoverall responsibility of these educators is to enhance the healthand the wellbeing of the community. To achieve this, they need todesign educational programs that can enable them to enlighten thecommunity and address its unique needs (NCHEC, 2016). They can alsoplay the advocacy roles by pushing for the development as well as theimplementation of programs that are required to enhance community’shealth.
Howto Fulfill One Responsibility
Iintend to fulfill the responsibility of developing and implementingthe educational programs. I will achieve this by working with thecommunity and collaborating with other educators as well as otherhealth care professionals.
Mypreferred job listing is “Health Educator” in Great Lakes BayHealth Centers. The Great Lake Bay is a health care center that islooking for an educator who will work on a full-time basis. Theeducator is expected to deliver health-related education services toadolescents in the community and school settings (NCHEC, 2016). Someof the service areas that the educator will cover include the mentalas well as sexual health, HIV, and substance abuse.
Iam interested in the job listing because it will give me anopportunity to pursue my career goal, which is to use my knowledge tomake a positive difference in the society. By educating the communityon risky behaviors (such as unprotected sex and the abuse ofsubstances), I will be able to help many people change their conductsin order to avoid disease. However, I will need a master’s degreeand two years of working experience in order to be eligible for thejob.
Itis evident that the NCHEC plays a critical role of ensuring thathealth care educators have the qualifications that enhance theirability to serve the community. However, there is one more questionthat one may ask regarding the Health Education and NCHEC. Thisquestion is “How can an educator document the continuing educationachievement in order to retain the certification?”
