Thefilm “Dior and I” is a documentary movie by Frederic Tcheng donein 20141.It is about the different creative fashion works by the renowneddesigner Raf Simon. The movie was made in acceptance to a request byChristian Dior S.A2.Thispaper purport to feature on some of the many factors that go intomaking a line of clothing or design that lines up with modernfactors, and the originality of a line of design.
Thedocumentary is based on the rise of a connection between Raf Simonsand the late master designer of the company and fashion industry. Ashow of this connection gives a timeline of the change of fashionbetween one era and another through the change of designers. Fashionand design changed in nature with the designer3.Additionally, the more formal character and personal design preferredby the late designer is shown to translate into his designs thatfeatured more formal traits. On the other hand, Raf Simon who prefersdressing in black sweaters and round neck shirts changes the designtrend to encompass a mix of formal and informal traits4.
“Diorand I” places the fashion industry at the delicate position ofhaving to achieve a balance between artistic accomplishments andcommerce. With emerging trends, tastes, and preferences in fashionthere is a need for design to match to the needs of their consumermarket demands with constraints of time and resources for suchsignificant investments into the different designs. As such, fashionand design are brought out to not just being about the designer`sskill in the art but also the combination of the other factors andpressures. In the industry, there is a need to maintain class andoriginality of designs that will appeal to the consumer market toensure rates of sales made are beyond the mandated breakeven point5.
Thefilm points to the vitality of maintenance of originality and a trendin the fashion and design industry. A design line and fashionindustry are particular to the original stature established by thefounding artist or designer. In this case, “Dior and I” set theoriginality aspects established by the founder designer that have hadto be maintained and upheld within the company to date. It shows astream of deliberated effort by workers in the design house and RafSimon to ensure all designs made maintain a touch of the originaldesigns and values established by the late designer6. The challenges were to change with the fashion demands of time whilekeeping the Dior look of romance, feminism, and curvy silhouettes.The film achieves this by showing samples of different designs fromdifferent time periods and how all can be seen to share some fashionsimilarities. Thefilm was able to give a timeline of the interactions of the differentchange factors of the fashion and design industry. It showed howaspects such as a change in designers, commercial considerations,high and low cultures and changes in trends and preferences areassimilated to shape design8.Through the Dior fashion and legacy, these changes are shown whilestill noting a constant maintenance of the original values of thefounding designer line9.
