EOP ESSAY 3
Educational Opportunity Program
I spent most of my childhood with my father as my mother was alwaysin Africa. Living with my father was quite challenging as I was theone required to perform most the housekeeping chores. My childhoodwas characterized by my father working two jobs a day, which resultedin me having to help him with various activities in the houseincluding assisting with bills, and working on all house choresbefore my dad got home. Working on school work, house chores, andhelping my father with the bills resulted in me working until latehours of the night, which in turn affected my academic performance.Despite the impact on my achievement, working on school work andhelping my father with the bills assisted in me developing ahardworking and time management culture, one I intend on maintainingduring my post-secondary education and later profession.
The EOP program will benefit me in various ways including theprovision of counselors, peer tutors, and financial aid. EOP programsinvolve the assigning of counselors to each student. These counselorsare useful in providing advice on academic and personal matters thatmay affect students during their stay in college (Berkman, 2016).Since I intend on pursuing my education to graduate level, I believethe counseling provided through the EOP counselors will assist me inmaking the right choice. I also believe that the provision of acounselor will assist me to tackle the various challenges that I mayencounter during my college life. Being an EOP student will alsoassist me in getting a mentor while in school. EOP programs involvereferring students to peer tutors (Berkman, 2016). These individualsare essential in providing advice on the different ways to tackle thedifferent issues that may affect undergraduate students. EOP providedtutors be also major specific therefore, I hope to benefitacademically as tutors are likely to provide advice on the variousacademic challenges that may exist in my chosen area of study. EOPprograms also involve the provision of financial aid to students. Ibelieve the financial grant provided by the EOP will benefit meduring my academic endeavors. My high school years were characterizedby me taking summer jobs to help with the bills. This experienceresulted in me learning various financial management skills. Theseskills will assist in managing the grant provided by the EOP.
If accepted for the program, I intend on working hard. Althoughworking on house chores and helping my father with the bills affectedmy high school performance, the experience taught me the value ofworking hard. I intend on employing the same hard work in my academicwork. I also rarely give up therefore, such an opportunity will notgo wasted. The various challenges that I experienced while living ina low-income neighborhood taught me the value of resilience. As astudent, I believe such resilience will be important in tackling theseveral problems that may exist in college. I intend on being thefirst individual in my family to graduate from college therefore, ifaccepted for the program, I intend on taking advantage of all the EOPprovisions including the counseling sessions, and academic advisorysessions. I also intend on attending every EOP workshop to ensure Iunderstand e the various effective learning methods that may ensure Iachieve my goal of being the first person in my family to achieve anundergraduate status.
