CASABLANCA MOVIE REVIEW 3
Casablanca, which is a film that rereleased in New York inNovember 1942, remains to be one of the iconic films with three OscarAwards to date. Numerous people doubted the quality of the film, butit has remained exceptional to date with its black and white video. In order to understand the film, a little information on recenthistory may be necessary. The film is directed by the experiencedMichael Curtiz. This shows the quality and expertise of the producersof the original film. The film is set a year after the Germansinvaded France hence making the storyline relevant. The producersadded a twist of romance and love to make the film interesting andmulti-faceted.
Thesis: Despite the film being produced in a hurry, its greatactors, memorable script line and songs have made it one of the mostmemorable movies in history.
The film’s main characters are Rick, IIsa and Laszlo. Rick is theproprietor of a nightclub in Casablanca where Germans and otherrefugees come at night. The refugees are attempting to run away tothe US, Portugal and Europe using letters that are hard to get. Rickis the custodian of some of these letters from Ugarte. IIsa andLaszlo are married. However, IIsa loves Rick and when they come tohis nightclub to hide from the Nazis, their love is rekindled.Captain Louis Renault is pursuing them and Laszlo seeks to actquickly to get the letters that would enable him and his wife escapeto the U.S. Contrary to what many people would expect, despite IIsadeclaring she still loves Rick, he helps her and her husband toescape to Lisbon. In most of the 21st century romancemovies, such an ending would never be predicted. The reunion betweenRick and IIsa would have resulted in the dissolution of Laszlo’smarriage to IIsa and Rick would have flown away with IIsa.
Anytime the movie Casablanca comes to mind, the acts of IIsaand Rick are manifested. The two played their roles exceptionally.Rick had to depict his complex personality in the film and it is hardto think that the producers would have had any other first choiceactors for these roles. Both characters created the palpable romantictension in the film that has formed the basis of the movie and itsturning point. Laszlo has also played a respectable role of the otherguy in the love and romance triangle. His roles cannot be overlookedin the film as he is the enabler of the dilemma that surrounds Rickand IIsa over their love.
While concluding, the failure by other modern actors to produce areplica of the Casablanca is an indication of the originalityof the film. The choice of the actors, script and the theme songs hasmade this film one of the greatest in history. Despite being in blackand white, its timely release during World War II makes its relevanceunmatched.
