BodyRitual among the Nacirema
The Naciremaculture is a representation of the rituals that Americans engage infrom an outside point of view. Furthermore, it is beyond reasonabledoubts that, the Nacirema have great regards for the image values, afactor that makes them engage in disgusting activities just to fitinto the way of life. What is more intriguing is that the communityhas what it takes to run a self-sustaining economy, but they preferto engage in the disgusting activities.
Besides thegroup seems to encompass of ordinary Americans, or rather people whohave the same intelligence as the American citizens but have engagedin peculiar behaviors of injuring and hurting themselves (BodyRitual among the Nacirema, 2017).To wipe the doubts, if the society was not as advanced as the typicalAmericans, then they would not be in a position to fund all therituals that they execute as mentioned in the article. However, thepractice is barbaric and disgusting, and it was not the mostappropriate way to represent the American culture. Who would want tobefriend individuals executing such rituals?
From alogical point of view, the culture or rather the way of life seems tobe low scoring especially after consideration of the fact that theyhurt and injure themselves just to fit into the primitive society. However, culture plays a crucial role in nurturing my understandingof other cultures. There is no need to judge the Nacirema way of lifeas all cultures are different and just as we learn in school, weshould learn to foster diversity by appreciating our differences andknowing that it is our culture that makes us who we are.
PersonalReflection on the Practice
Initially, the disgusting culture had consumed me until I read the articlehalfway and realized that it talked about the present day situation.I had to read the article again, and I got to understand thatNacirema is Americans spelled backward and that the ceremonies andrituals that the people perform are the same ones that the Americansexecute on a daily basis. At this point, it dawned that the shrine isa representation of the modern day medicine cabinet, the charms inthe shrines are the drug stored in the cabinet whereas the listeneris a modern day therapist.
Notably, the“latipso” represents a hospital and what is more intriguing, isthat the word is “hospital” spelled backward (BodyRitual among the Nacirema, 2017)!After further reading, I realized that the author has alsoexaggerated the culture of the American society to some extent withregards to our current obsession with beauty and outside appearance.Americans indeed waste much of their time on themselves preparing forthe day but comparing it with the Nacirema culture is not logical.
Therefore, the culture is an apparent illusion of the day to day activities ofthe American citizens at large. However, it seems to have rewardedand consequently slapped a different culture name on the top. Therefore, as a reader one understands that the disgusting Naciremaculture is an external representation of the American’s culture, but they still find it disgusting without actually realizing that itis their own. Therefore, the central theme is that as Americans weshould not overlook other cultures and regard ours as a superior one.We are all special in our ways.
