Application:Adoption of New Technology Systems
Application:Adoption of New Technology Systems
Inthe current context of the medical field, the inception of theelectronic health record (EHR) is perceived to be one of thesubstantial innovations in this sector. Using this platform, historical records can be analyzed to forecast the future trends inthe health sector. As the implementation of this new technology takesplace in various areas of the health sector, it is important tounderstand that this innovation has various drawbacks. Most of thenurses who are the end users of this EHR system are resistant tochange. Due to this growing resistance, there is a growing need togive motivation to these nurses about the immense importance of thissystem that would help in changing their perceptions and attitudes. The primary objective of this assignment is to utilize the diffusiontheory of innovation as postulated by Roger to assist the nurses toadopt the Electronic Health Record system a new and betterinnovation in the health sector.
ANurse Facilitator’s Role
AsI carry out my role as the nurse facilitator, one of the mostimportant issues that I have to address is the proper communicationof the meaning of the idea behind HER and its accrued benefits. Inmost cases, the notion of poor communication creates an impediment tothe implementation of this innovation (Fickenscher & Bakerman,2011). Therefore, information about the objectives, the ideas and thevision for change should be well explained to the variousstakeholders such as the member of staff. The credibility of anyfacilitator by the recipients is based on how best the information onthe subject matter is relayed and how these recipients receive it. Inthis respect, a proper knowledge of the EHR system is essential so asto help me explain to the nurses the real benefits that thisimplementation would bring to the health sector. As the pioneer ofchange, there is a need to have an active and self-driven approach toleadership while maintaining excellent communication skills and beinga role model leader to others. I would use these qualities of to notonly give the nurses the real facts about the EHR but also define itregarding its benefits to the health sector.
Accordingly,I will outline the various goals and objectives that this systemwould address with keen attention to linking them to the developmentof the health sector. Similarly, I would solve the issue on the needfor change and create a platform for motivation for change. Indealing with these concerns to the adopters of this new system, it isimportant to build high level of loyalty, trust and good relationshipwith these nurses. To this effect, I would make these adopters awareof my prowess in the execution of various healthcare projects and howsuccessful the previous implementations have been (McGonigle &Mastrian, 2012). I will also provide certain vital insights about theneed for changing the benefits that come with changes in themanagement of various health records in the medical sector. Accordingto the diffusion theory of innovation, as connoted by Rogers, thereexist five characteristics that determine the perceptions towardsunderstanding and adopting a new system of technology. Theseattributes are such as the simplicity, compatibility, containment ofnoticeable results, trialability and a notion of relative advantage(Rogers, 2003).
Relativeadvantage: In explaining how the new EHR system would be more usefulthan the old system, I would explain to the nurses on the automationof the retrieval of information about patients and their healthconditions in a more convenient way. I would also explicate the factthat the authorization of various documents would be done inreal-time making the workflows with this hospital faster than before. The efficiency created by this new system will permit the nurses tohave an easy time in retrieving information about their patients.
Compatibility:Through this feature, I will demonstrate how the system is aligned tothe current standards and values in the nursing practice. I wouldalso persuade nurses that the process of EHR implementation processwill be done by professionals who understand the real context ofnursing and healthcare requirements.
Simplicity:Here, I will digest to the nurses how easy it would be to use the EHRsystem and how quick it is to learn about its usability. I will alsoprovide evidence based research about organizations that haveemployed the EHR system before and their feedback on the same. Thismove will give them the picture of how simple it is to use thisplatform. Trialability: This feature will allow me to give the nursesan insight on how various organizations have used this new system.Observable results: It is through this function that I will give theadopters the evidence-based results on the success of this system andhow it has been important in streamlining the information system ofvarious sectors of the economy.
Inconclusion, the inception of EHR system is very crucial in the fieldof healthcare due to its immense value. Resistance to change is oneof the impediments to the implementation of this system as addressedby nurses. However, it is still important to embrace this change forthe better since it forms an integral part of attainment of profoundleadership within the nursing sector. The role of a nurse facilitatoris indispensable in transforming the minds of nurses to accept thechanges that come with the inception of the EHR system.
