is viewed as a social problem because of its adverse effects on thedrinker and the society as a whole. Managing alcohol addictionrequires the active participation of every member of the society orelse they will pay a heavy price for it including medical expenses, domestic violence, accidents and other social and health issues.Alcohol addicts can also seek divine intervention when fighting thebad habit. This essay is a personal account of how I managed toovercome alcoholism. It confirms that even though societal support iscritical, with God`s divine intervention, everything can work out andone can be relieved from alcohol addiction once and for good.
Oneof the modern social problems facing individuals and families isalcoholism. Just as smoking, alcoholism has claimed millions oflives, yet it can be managed. Alcohol addiction can cause deathbecause it leads to impaired judgment and recklessness (Moodie et al.2013). Individuals who are addicted to the drug end up squanderingtheir income at the expense of their families. In one study conductedby the CDC, it was confirmed that there is a strong correlationbetween accidents and frequent alcohol abuse (CDCInjury Center.(2017). However, even with such devastating statistics, alcoholismcan be managed and above trajectories reversed and thousands of livessaved.
Before2001, I was an alcohol addict. My addiction was so severe that it wasimpossible to go even a day without the drug. As is the case withmany users, I did not see this as a problem despite numerouscomplaints from peers and family. My health was deteriorating veryquickly because I did not have an appetite for most foods. Lookingback at my life, I can affirm that I was heading the wrong way andwas slowly losing touch people and important things in life. It wasat this point that it became evident that I had to stop the habit andgain control of my life. A close friend approached and advised me toseek professional help from anonymous alcohol groups and religiousleaders.
Unlikemany people, I reached out to God to help me with my addiction.Although at the start I was not a very religious person, I decided togive it a try. I read several Biblical scriptures about the love ofGod and how He is always ready to help those who cry to him for help. The Bible is very specific when it comes to spirituality. Forinstance, it states that if either your hand or mouth is causing youto sin, one should get rid of it. In my case, it was evident thatAlcohol was causing me to indulge in dangerous and sinful activities.Through the help of my church leaders, friends and families, I joinedsocial groups which kept me busy. As time went by, my relationshipwith God deepened even further, and I found more reasons to be onGod`s side. Additionally, I realized that there are a lot of benefitsthat one can obtain from having a healthy relationship with God thanany other drug in this world. Since I stopped alcohol abuse in 2001,I have been clean since then to date.
AlthoughI use to abuse alcohol several years back, I can stand today andattest that it is through God`s blessing and favor that I managed toovercome the addiction. I am a firm believer of the word and love myGod with all my heart. Even though there are alternative solutionssuch as rehabilitation and counselling, when one also include God aspart of the solution, miracles can happen, and addiction can beovercome within a very short time. My life and battle against alcoholabuse are a living testimony of the love and care of God towards Hischildren.
