Final Self Evaluation
After submitting my midtermevaluation report, I realized that the semester was almost over and Ineeded to work hard on my clinical skills. I started by setting moreprecise goals. For instance, I had to distinguish each instrument andits designated usage. Also, I had to be cautious when usingsharp-tipped instruments such as theSickle Scaler because they may traumatize my patients if I droppedthem to the ground or use them inappropriately. Another importantgoal was to ensure that I continue practicing on how to use thecomplicated instruments that I had learned at the beginning of thesemester. Besides, I worked hard to adhere to the due dates for allof my assignments such as HIPAA, OSHA, ADHA membership, DH shadowingsummary, instruments log, journals, and the care plan. Through hardwork, I managed to deliver all of them on time. Besides, I managed toknow my peers better and interact with them more often. I am proud ofmyself for completing my 19 PE`s and earning PTC in all of them. Also, I completed my peer patient day and received PTC for theclinical aspect of it. However, I earned NPTC for the treatment plan.
Finally, Ihave completed all the 19 PE’s and received a PTC grade in all ofthem. I received numerous positive comments from my instructor. Forexample, I was commended for my performance with fluoride tray, application of pressure during EOE, and sequencing with IOE. Theother aspects that I received positive comments from my instructorinclude time management, stroking, positioning, and properapplication of lateral pressure. From all these great comments, Ideserved to earn a PTC. On the other hand, I received a few remarkswhich will help me improve on my areas of weakness. For instance, myinstructor told me to remember to have the patient move his/her headin position for me to get better access. Currently, I have improvedsignificantly on my areas of weakness. For instance, I have improvedon the indirect vision. Besides, I am now able to distinguish thecorrect ends for the instruments since I have been practicing in thisarea more often. I will continue practicing on how to use the variousinstruments regularly to enhance my skills.
Additionally,I managed my time more wisely. For instance, I was always preparedfor the clinic. As a result, I was commended for being always on timeand prepared for the patients. My instructor also praised me forasking insightful questions and communicating effectively with thepatients. My instructor was amazed at my improvements. However, Ireceived other comments that I am seeking to use to enhance myeffectiveness as a healthcare practitioner. For instance, I wascautioned against chewing gum while in the clinic. Besides, I wasadvised to keep my water away while on duty. I will use these piecesof advice to enhance my effectiveness when I start working with realpatients. I have realized that I grind my teeth while in the clinicwhenever I feel nervous. As such, I chew gum to help me overcome mygrinding problem. Besides, during the peer patient day, I was toldthat I had challenges managing my time because I took more timechatting and doing PI than expected. I was nervous on that day andas a result, I had challenges managing my time. However, I amplanning on acquiring a time clock to help me improve my timemanagement skills.
Forcritical thinking and problem-solving skills, I experienced somechallenges at the beginning of the semester balancing my duty towardsmy children and academic work, particularly during school days. Forexample, one day, one of my children became sick, and I had to skipschool to attend to her needs. From that moment, I realized that Imight end up not performing as per my expectation if I continuedskipping classes. I resolved to talk to my friends in advance forthem to help me in case any issue came up regarding my children in myabsence. I notified some of my friends that I needed their helptaking care of my children whenever I was not available. I am gladthat they offered to help on this issue and nothing went wrong. Also,on the clinical aspect of my course, I appreciate that my peers wereof much help because they understood my family situation. Forinstance, they understood that I could not come early to prepare formy clinic work. As such, they always prepared the clinic in themorning and started as clinicians while I took the role of thepatient after my arrival. After that, we would switch roles where Iwould act as the clinician and them as my patients. Also, myinstructors were helpful to me since they understood that I neededmore aid considering that I am not a native speaker. I appreciatethem for their understanding and the patience that they showed me. For now, I am working hard towards acquiring as much knowledge as Ican from the remaining part of the semester. Having completed thepeer patient day, I am confident that I will excel working with realpatients once next semester begins. I am looking forward to thatexperience.
