Due to increasedcompetition in the business world, creativity is imperative forsustainability. Competency in workplace demand individuals who arecreative to solve complex situations that arise. This paper exploreshow creativity is correlated with living abroad.
AdamGalinsky and William Maddux of Northwestern University conductednumerous experiments to determine how living abroad improves one’screativity based on 205 students (Baumgartner, 2015). They placed a candle, box of tacks, matchesnear a cardboard wall. They requested the students to light thecandle in a manner that that wax will not find its way to the flooror the table. 60% of students that had stayed abroad in the previousyears solved the puzzle with ease(Baumgartner, 2015). Only 42% of students who had never traveledoverseas were able to tackle the challenge (Baumgartner, 2015). The solution involved sticking the emptytacks and fixing the candle. On another case, the University ofFlorida requested 90 students to draw two pictures and explainproblems they are likely to confront if they were to walk in thespace (UOF, 2012). 45 students who had lived abroad outshined therest by providing impressive pictures, and detailed description usinghumor (UOF, 2012).
Organizations shouldoften offer international trips, especially to the top management. Inaddition, during recruitment, the human resource managers shouldrecruit some applicants who have either worked or received theireducation overseas. Sponsoring employees to overseas will aroseinnovative ways of solving problems in an organization such as newmachines to boost productivity. Moreover, by recruiting some of theapplicants who learned abroad, organizations will have a vibrantworkforce that is proactive (Reilly, 2013). Employees who have workedor learned overseas are likely to tackle anticipated problems andprevent a company from extra expenditures. Consequently, livingabroad is key to growth and sustainability of an organization.
